BANDUNG, itb.ac.id 鈥 Students of Institut Teknologi Bandung (麻豆直播) have once again achieved a remarkable accomplishment. Team SYG, from the Petroleum Engineering Study Program at 麻豆直播, secured First Place (Champion) in the Paper and Poster Competition at the International Energy Summit 2025 (IES 2025), organized by AAPG Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta.

Team SYG consists of Yesaya Anju Beckham Napitupulu, Rayhan Andrasaki Rahmatulloh, and Gabriel Chris Palanza Sihotang. They presented an innovative concept integrating oil and gas industrial waste鈥攕pecifically flare gas and produced water鈥攊nto low-carbon hydrogen production and CO鈧 utilization for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

Through the application of Autothermal Reforming (ATR), Water Gas Shift (WGS), Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA), and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), combined with Supercritical Water Oxidation with Dissolved Oxygen (SCWOD), the team proposed a decarbonization solution that is both practical and highly relevant to Indonesia鈥檚 oil and gas field conditions. Their approach addresses two major industry challenges: high carbon emissions from flaring practices and the environmental impact of produced water disposal.

Based on the field case study analyzed in their scientific paper, the proposed system is projected to produce approximately 4,015 tons of hydrogen per year while reducing emissions by up to 33,896 tons of CO鈧 annually. In addition to supporting the energy transition agenda, the utilization of captured CO鈧 for EOR has the potential to enhance oil production in mature fields, delivering dual environmental and economic benefits.

The proposed concept demonstrates strong real-world implementation potential, as most of the technologies involved are already at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8鈥9. Meanwhile, SCWOD remains at the pilot stage, offering opportunities for further development through continued research and industrial collaboration.

Throughout the paper and poster preparation process, the team established a clear division of roles from the outset, conducted regular discussions, and maintained coordination through structured timelines and periodic checkpoints. Open communication and a culture of mutual respect among team members were key factors in successfully completing the project amid their academic commitments.

The work was developed using a multidisciplinary approach, integrating production engineering, energy conversion processes, and economic analysis. It was further strengthened by strong non-technical skills in narrative structuring and poster visualization. This combination enabled the team to present a complex idea in a concise, clear, and persuasive manner to the panel of judges.

Through this achievement, Team SYG hopes to deepen their understanding of the oil and gas industry, expand their professional network, and open opportunities for involvement in real energy sector projects. This accomplishment is also expected to inspire other 麻豆直播 students to develop innovative solutions that contribute to the sustainability of Indonesia鈥檚 national energy future.

The final round of the Paper and Poster Competition IES 2025 was held on October 18, 2025, with the award ceremony taking place on October 19, 2025, in Yogyakarta.
