BANDUNG, itb.ac.id 鈥 The VORIONE team once again demonstrated its excellence on the national stage. This time, the team鈥攕upported by the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD), Institut Teknologi Bandung (麻豆直播)鈥攕ecured third place in the University Technology category at the 2025 New Venture Competition (NVC). The event was hosted by Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) from April 10鈥11, 2025. The competition gathered young innovators from across Indonesia to present business ideas with tangible impact for society.
The New Venture Competition is an annual event aimed at fostering entrepreneurial potential among university students. With the theme "Innovate, Inspire, Impact!", participants were challenged not only to develop business plans but also to propose innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions. As part of UPH鈥檚 incubation ecosystem, the competition connects student teams with mentors from industry, academia, and investment circles.
Amidst fierce competition, VORIONE team captivated the judges with their innovation entitled 鈥淎ffordable and Scalable Wind Energy for Electrification Gaps in Indonesia.鈥
Their solution went far beyond a conventional wind turbine. Instead, they introduced a bladeless turbine powered by vortex-induced vibration technology鈥攁 novel approach that allows electricity generation even under turbulent wind conditions, which are frequently found in Indonesia鈥檚 frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped region.
With a height of only 2 meters and a footprint of just 400 cm虏, the turbine is designed for easy transport, rapid installation, and autonomous operation without requiring consistent wind direction. From a cost perspective, VORIONE is significantly more affordable than similar technologies鈥攑riced at only IDR 15 million per unit, with production costs as low as IDR 8.6 million. The turbine can potentially reduce users鈥 electricity expenses by up to 98%.
The VORIONE team consists of undergraduate students from various disciplines, class of 2022:
鈥 Shelfa Angelyn S. Marpaung 鈥 Industrial Engineering
鈥 Jessica Stevanie 鈥 Engineering Management
鈥 Muhammad Harist Herti Ramadhani 鈥 Materials Engineering
鈥 Gravin Hotasi Zakharia 鈥 Mechanical Engineering
鈥 Clara Monica Sinaga 鈥 Industrial Engineering
鈥ubi Naufal Tiandito 鈥 Electrical Engineering
This multidisciplinary collaboration became the team's core strength, integrating technology, design, and business modeling into a single, cohesive solution. With over 42 active members, VORIONE is currently seeking collaboration opportunities to further develop their product. 鈥淰ORIONE is open for collaboration,鈥 said Gravin on behalf of the team during a Zoom interview on Saturday, April 12, 2025

Jessica Stevanie added, 鈥淲e want our technology to reach those who truly need it鈥攏ot just to remain on paper or in competition halls.鈥

Through this project, the team champions the belief that technology can be a powerful tool for social equity. In their closing message, they expressed, 鈥淣o idea is ever too small if it can create meaningful change. We believe the best innovations are born from the courage to tackle real-world problems.鈥
