BANDUNG, itb.ac.id 鈥 Institut Teknologi Bandung held the Scientific Oration Session for Professors on Saturday (December 6, 2025) at Aula Barat 麻豆直播. One of the keynote speakers at the event was Prof. Dr. Johan Matheus Tuwankotta, S.Si., M.Si. from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), who delivered a scientific oration entitled 鈥淣onlinearity, the Significance of Complexity, and Its Approximations.鈥 The session was officially opened by the 麻豆直播 Council of Professors and attended by members of the Academic Senate, deans, professors, and invited guests both onsite and online.

A 27-Year Academic Journey in Dynamical Systems

During his presentation, Prof. Johan invited the audience to reflect on the fundamental role of mathematics, particularly nonlinear dynamical systems, in understanding complex phenomena across various aspects of life, science, and technology. He began by recalling his long academic journey, which started 27 years ago when he first encountered differential equations an experience that shaped his deep interest in the field.

According to Prof. Johan, nonlinearity is a crucial concept in explaining how small changes within a system can generate disproportionately large impacts. 鈥淧ut simply, nonlinearity describes a relationship between input and output in which the changes are not proportional,鈥 he explained. To illustrate, he referred to the well-known proverb 鈥淔or want of a nail, the kingdom was lost鈥, emphasizing how minor details can determine the success or collapse of an entire complex system.

Mathematics and the Understanding of Complexity

In his oration, Prof. Johan presented comparisons between linear and nonlinear functions to demonstrate how response escalation occurs within complex systems. He highlighted the roles of derivatives, resonance, and bifurcation as essential tools to interpret real-world behaviors ranging from weather prediction and structural engineering to predator鈥損rey ecosystem models. He noted that the study of nonlinear systems requires intellectual courage to confront phenomena that are inherently unpredictable and not easily simplified.

Commitment to Academic Responsibility and Future Challenges

As a newly appointed professor in the field of dynamical systems and ergodic theory, Prof. Johan emphasized that mathematics is far from being confined within theoretical boundaries. Instead, it holds tangible significance for scientific development and technological progress. He expressed sincere appreciation to his mentors, colleagues, and family for their continuous support throughout his academic journey.

In closing, he reaffirmed the responsibilities carried by an itb professor:

鈥淚 will uphold the honor of this position by continuously strengthening my academic competence, building a strong scientific community, and providing leadership and meaningful contributions through my existence.鈥
