BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Three students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (Â鶹ֱ²¥) won the Champion title at the IPFEST 2026 Hackathon Competition thanks to their artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, which has the potential to help the oil and gas industry work more efficiently, quickly, and accurately in determining which wells require intervention.
The team, named Hengker Berkelas, consists of Afdinal Ghibran Batubara and Rivo Parhorasan Manalu from the Petroleum Engineering Study Program, class of 2022, as well as Ghazy Achmed Movlech Urbayani from the Information Systems and Technology Study Program, class of 2023.
In the competition, they developed a machine learning-based screening system for well intervention candidate selection. The system is designed to help engineers identify wells that require further action more quickly and through a data-driven approach.
As oil and gas fields mature and production data volumes continue to increase, manual well selection becomes increasingly complex, time-consuming, and prone to bias. Through the system they developed, patterns indicating production issues can be detected earlier, allowing potential well intervention candidates to be identified in a more systematic manner.
This innovation is considered to have significant potential impact on the energy industry, particularly in Indonesia. By reducing the time needed for technical evaluation, companies can improve work efficiency and accelerate field development cycles. The system also has the potential to reduce the risk of errors caused by cognitive bias and human error in decision-making.
In addition, the solution designed by Team Hengker Berkelas is projected to help companies save millions of dollars by reducing the likelihood of poorly targeted well interventions. From an economic perspective, the team also conducted an evaluation using a stochastic approach to assess the system’s impact on project economic value and development cycle effectiveness. This aspect became one of their key strengths in the competition.
However, the system is currently still at the simulation stage. Going forward, there remains broad potential for further development, including the addition of more diverse data types, integration with actual field data, and calibration processes so that the system can recognize the unique characteristics of each oil and gas field. With such development, the system is expected to become more reliable, adaptive, and ready for real industrial implementation.

In designing the solution, the team began by reviewing scientific journals and various industry references to understand the core problem. They then mapped the contributing factors and selected the most promising solution approach.
Interdisciplinary collaboration became the team’s main strength. The petroleum engineering perspective helped provide a deeper understanding of well characteristics and production issues, while the information technology perspective strengthened the algorithmic, automation, and system development aspects. The combination of these two disciplines resulted in a comprehensive solution that is highly relevant to the current needs of the energy industry.
To maintain work effectiveness amid their academic responsibilities, they adopted a modular workflow. Each member was assigned specific responsibilities that could be carried out in parallel, allowing the development process to remain efficient through to the final presentation stage.
For the team, the most valuable lesson from the process was the importance of communication. Differences in academic backgrounds, which initially had the potential to become a challenge, instead became an advantage as each member learned from and understood one another’s perspectives.
Winning IPFEST 2026 has become an important stepping stone for Team Hengker Berkelas to continue innovating. They hope this achievement will strengthen their confidence to keep creating, contribute to the national energy industry, and earn further accomplishments in future competitions.
