Genting Island is one of the islands in the Karimunjawa Archipelago, located to the east of Karimunjawa Island. Administratively, Genting Island is part of Karimunjawa Subdistrict, Karimunjawa District, Jepara Regency, Central Java. The island has a relatively small area and is inhabited by fewer than 500 residents, most of whom work as fishermen. Although it possesses significant natural resource potential, such as well-preserved coral reefs, scenic hills and beaches, and various marine tourism attractions. Genting Island has so far received limited attention, particularly in terms of community capacity building, provision of basic infrastructure, and enhancement of coastal resilience. Limited access to education, healthcare services, and economic facilities remains a major challenge for local residents in achieving improved welfare.

These conditions highlight the need for multidisciplinary collaboration in strengthening community capacity and empowerment. The community service program, packaged as the Genting Island Expedition, was carried out under the main theme: 鈥淢apping and Enhancing Coastal and Small Island Resilience through Educational Strengthening, Economic Development, and Environmental Conservation on Genting Island, Karimunjawa Subdistrict, Jepara Regency, Central Java.鈥�. In its implementation, 15 students from Geopoint IMG-麻豆直播 and 7 students from ENVRZ! KMIL-麻豆直播 were deployed to carry out the mission through the F麻豆直播 PPMI Program 2025. The expedition addressed various issues across multiple sectors, including education, economy, and environment.

Limited access to education formed the basis for strengthening educational programs through literacy enhancement and the development of students鈥� character and learning motivation at SDN 5 Karimunjawa. This program was designed to address existing limitations, particularly in literacy facilities and the availability of engaging learning methods. Through the construction of reading corners and the implementation of a nature-based learning program, the initiative aimed to foster reading interest, improve literacy skills, and build students鈥� character to become enthusiastic learners who care about the environment and are capable of critical thinking.

鈥淪DN 5 Karimunjawa is the only formal educational facility on Genting Island. Observing the limitations and challenges faced by both students and teachers, we decided to build a reading corner in every classroom and organize outdoor learning activities through simple science experiments such as water filtration, making hand-churned ice cream, and waste sorting education. Seeing the children鈥檚 enthusiasm and spirit, we believe that with encouragement and support from various parties, education on Genting Island can continue to improve and children will gain the confidence to dream big,鈥� said Mulan Azalea Sugiarto (Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Student, 2023).

Genting Island also has local economic potential that can be developed through its signature product, cassava tape (fermented cassava). Genting鈥檚 cassava tape is distinctive compared to similar products elsewhere, as it is made from yellow cassava and has a richer, sweeter taste. However, the added value of this product has not yet been optimized due to limited innovation in processing, packaging, and the application of modern marketing strategies. Therefore, a participatory workshop targeting local women was designed to enhance the competitiveness of local products through the development of various derivative tape-based products, while also strengthening branding, packaging, and more attractive marketing strategies.

From an environmental perspective, Genting Island continues to face challenges in waste management. To date, the island does not yet have an integrated waste processing system. In this context, students from KMIL-麻豆直播 played a key role through the implementation of environmental programs as part of their academic application. These programs included the construction of Biopore Pot System facilities as a solution for household organic waste management. The biopore system not only serves as a waste treatment medium but also directly provides nutrients for plants grown in pots integrated with the biopore system. In addition, the provision and distribution of waste containers at several strategic locations were carried out to increase community awareness of waste segregation. For inorganic waste processing, a rocket stove facility was constructed, chosen for its ability to produce lower emissions compared to conventional open burning methods.

In addition to implementing the main programs within these three pillars, the IMG-麻豆直播 team also conducted photogrammetric mapping of Genting Island as an application of their academic expertise to provide accurate base maps for the local community. These maps are expected to be useful for various purposes, including development planning, tourism potential management, and decision-making support.

鈥淭hrough this expedition, we as students hope to contribute solutions to the various challenges faced by the community. The programs that have been implemented are expected to empower local residents and generate sustainable impacts. We see that Genting Island has great potential that deserves to be optimally developed, and we hope that in the future this island will receive greater attention,鈥� said Raihan Aqeel Keanu Azra (Environmental Infrastructure Engineering Student, 2022).

The Genting Island Expedition is not only a realization of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and an application of academic knowledge acquired on campus, but also a space for students to learn directly alongside the community. Through active involvement with local residents, students are able to understand social conditions firsthand, enhance their social sensitivity, and recognize their role as members of the academic community who bear responsibility in contributing to national development.
