BANDUNG, itb.ac.id 鈥 Yasmine Khalida Putri, a student of the Interior Design Study Program at the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), Institut Teknologi Bandung (麻豆直播), won First Place in the Student Awards category at the 4th HIMKI Design Awards, held as part of the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) 2026 at ICE BSD.
She earned the award through her lounge chair design, CHAIRKURU, which explores an integrated seating form using a sustainable rattan-based material approach. The work was recognized by the jury for the strength of its concept, material innovation, and the quality of its prototype realization.
Yasmine, who is affectionately known as Mine, is an eighth-semester Interior Design student at 麻豆直播. Her interest in interior and furniture design has grown since childhood, particularly through her experience watching home renovation programs and her direct involvement in arranging spaces with her family.
鈥淚 enjoy how the design process can transform the atmosphere of a space and the experience of its users,鈥 Yasmine said.
Throughout her academic journey at FSRD 麻豆直播, Yasmine has actively explored various disciplines in art and design before ultimately focusing on spatial and object design. She said that her inspiration often comes from everyday phenomena.
鈥淚 see a great deal of potential in human habits, which can lead to design solutions that are both relevant and familiar,鈥 she said.

Her achievement as First Place winner was both unexpected and deeply meaningful. Yasmine said that receiving the top award at the HIMKI Design Awards served as strong validation that her design could be accepted and appreciated by the industry. She also viewed the achievement as motivation to continue exploring the potential of local design in the global arena.
The competition process began with the submission of a concept proposal and continued through to the physical realization of the work. Within a limited production period, Yasmine had to directly oversee the fabrication process in the workshop to ensure that the quality of the design was maintained.
鈥淲ith a production deadline of around 20 days, the biggest challenges were time management and the technical complexity of the process, especially because the form of this chair seat had never been made before,鈥 she said.
CHAIRKURU itself was developed from an assignment in the Furniture Design III course. The design uses Karuun庐 stripe, an innovative rattan veneer material that emphasizes sustainability.
鈥淚 wanted to prove that natural materials such as rattan can be transformed into contemporary furniture products with strong competitiveness,鈥 Yasmine said.
In addition to its distinctive visual character, the chair was designed with attention to production efficiency, structural strength, and user comfort. Its relatively lightweight construction also adds value by supporting flexible use.
Yasmine believes that her work holds strong potential for Indonesia鈥檚 furniture industry.
鈥淐hairkuru is proof that local materials such as rattan can be elevated to the global stage. It can encourage the industry to shift toward more sustainable practices without losing commercial value,鈥 she said.
Looking ahead, she plans to further develop the design into a furniture series with a similar design language, while also exploring the application of the design principles she has learned at a broader spatial scale. At present, Yasmine is also focused on completing her final project on the redesign of public space.
Through this achievement, Yasmine also shared a message for students and young designers.
鈥淒o not hesitate to develop your class assignments into something bigger. The process is not easy, but it is through that process that we learn to face real challenges as designers,鈥 she said.
